Kim Richards - Artist Statement
This series of work grows from my passion for the North-West Highlands of Scotland - I am captivated by its rugged landscape and the life thrives within it. This work explores the relationship between immense space and the very small: the enormity of crag, corrie, ridge and sea providing natural counterpoints to the fragile vibrancy of the wildfowers and birdlife nestled within. To capture the myriad variety of texture, colour and tone in these wild places, I have employed mixed media. Layering acrylics, watercolours, monoprinting, stencilling, pastel pencils and oil pastels, I strive for depth and intensity. My passion for the outdoors has fuelled most of my work so far, and will undoubtedly continue to be the motivator spurring new work to come. I hope this collection evokes the awe and wonder I feel when surrounded by the tempestuous weather, shifting light and rolling tides of this majestic place.
